But to start, in recent years airlines have gone on an unprecedented shopping spree.

Airbus and Boeing, the European and American giants that produce all the world's large passenger

jetliners, have received orders for nearly 13,000 since 2011.

That's equivalent to 40% of the world's existing fleet.

But their luck now seems to be running out.
