Protest erupted

protests erupted in China this weekend against the country's zero COVID policy.

People are at a breaking point after nearly three years

of unrelenting controls during the coronavirus pandemic.

There are a couple of reasons why tensions around this have escalated recently.

First, the lockdown measures were blamed for

holding up rescue efforts in a deadly fire last week. Also, a huge COVID outbreak has

caused rules to be tightened in some places.

Mass protests are extremely rare in China

and authorities move quickly to try to stop them,

so there's a lot of global attention on this situation.

Number two, the man accused in the Buffalo Supermarket Rampage is set to plead guilty today. The 19-year-old is suspected of

killing 10 people in the racially motivated attack in May. He faces state charges

including domestic terrorism and murder as a hate crime.

A separate federal hate crimes case, which could result in the death penalty, is pending.
