Colombia averted a trade war for now. The two nations spent much of yesterday in a tense

standoff.

The South American country turned away two flights carrying Colombian migrants who had been deported from the U.S.

So President Donald Trump threatened to impose steep tariffs and visa restrictions on Colombia.

But by late yesterday, the White House said that Colombia had agreed to accept

deportation flights. The dramatic dispute was the most significant diplomatic crisis in decades

between the U.S. and one of its most important allies in Latin America. And it unfolded as

Trump is trying to carry out his campaign promise of mass deportations.

This weekend, Trump officials issued quotas to immigration and customs enforcement officers

to aggressively ramp up the number of arrests.
