Here are today's top stories. It's Monday, June 3rd.

Semi Bird, Washington State's GOP-endorsed candidate for governor is fighting allegations he exaggerated his military record.

A letter written by a

brigadier general in 2009 seems to reprimand, Bird, for wearing medals he didn't earn and

falsifying reports. A conservative radio host published the letter last week. Bird told

KUOW Soundside today he's admitted wrongdoing, but claimed he was trying to shield senior officers.

I'm not shifting blame. Oh, I took it. You can read it. But there's another side of that story. Who I didn't say and implicate.

KUOW also obtained Byrd's service record. He did receive a number of awards during deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bird has been endorsed by the state Republican Party in his bid for governor,

but recent polling has him way behind former Congressman Dave Reichert.

Reichert and Bird will face off in the primary August 6th.

Meanwhile, the historic conviction of former President Donald Trump was not on the agenda at the gathering of Washington State Republicans over the weekend.

And that's intentional as the group strategizes to win more elected positions in the state.

They're pushing back on personality politics in the hopes of

wooing more centrist voters. Olympia correspondent Jeannie Lindsay has more.

The mainstream Republicans of Washington say their main focus is getting conservatives elected

to do the, quote, boring work of governing. That's according to Peter Condilius, the group's vice chair.
