The long regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is over.

Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

Assad ruled Syria with an iron fist for more than two decades. Before that, his father did the same

for 30 years. But more than a half century of authoritarian rule came to a swift end yesterday.

It followed an 11-day offensive by the rebel Islamist group Hayat Tahri Hasham, or HTS.

As rebels closed in on Syria's capital, Damascus, Assad fled to the airport and to Moscow.

Russian state media said he had been granted asylum there. Russia was Assad's biggest backer.

Syria's nearly 13-year civil war displaced millions of people.

Around the world, many of them celebrated the fall of the regime.

That was the sound of celebrations in Turkey and in Greece.

Back in Syria, guards at Assad's notorious government prisons abandoned their posts.

Families arrived to search for their loved ones, some who had been missing for decades.

The U.S. responded by launching airstrikes on Islamic State camps in Syria

and said it was looking to help stabilize the country. President Biden spoke yesterday about the

situation. So it's now incumbent upon all the opposition groups to seek a role in governing Syria

to demonstrate their commitment for the rights of all Syrians,

the rule of law, and the protection of religious and ethnic minorities.

This weekend, the president-elect sat down with NBC

news for his first post-election TV interview. He told Meet the press that members of Congress
