On Friday, the CDC released the newest data on the Delta variant that had guided its latest

recommendation that vaccinated people continue to wear masks and doors in areas of high

transmission.

Specifically, the Delta variant is much more contagious than past variants.

It is as contagious as the chickenpox, and more contagious than Ebola, SARS, the common

cold, the seasonal flu, and smallpox.

It's also more likely to lead to severe illness than previous variants.

All of this makes sense with the new data that the average number of COVID cases reported

nationwide has almost doubled in the past 10 days, with 21,683 new cases on Friday.

The CDC said that there are also more breakthrough infections than previously thought, with 35,000

symptomatic infections per week, among 162 million vaccinated Americans, which equates

to less than 0.1% of those who are vaccinated.

The data also showed that vaccinated people who are infected carry a similar viral load

than unvaccinated people, and therefore they can spread it as easily.
