Summary

Welcome back to Motherkind Moment. Moment is your place on a Monday for calm, connection and maybe even a shift in perspective before the week ahead. Nova Reid is a Ted speaker, anti-racism activist, and author of the incredible book The Good Ally. I think the book should be required reading - it is informative and incredibly researched, kind and compassionate. Nova invites us to do the self-inquiry and uncomfortable work of unlearning our own racism. I hope you enjoy this clip. If you want to catch the full episode, click here. This could possibly be one of the most important conversations I’ve ever had on the Podcast. And they have sponsoring the podcast this week. Winter bugs are just the worst. And if you get ill as the parent, it is so challenging. And it's probably even harder seeing little ones unwell. So it's important to keep your family's

Racism is on the rise. Let's stop here at the bush in primary schools.

0:51.3

Yeah, there's a study by the NFPCC that's the one that I think I reference.

And it's showing that racial bullying in the playground is on the rise. And children as young as

1:03.3

three are being bullied and told that the other children don't want to play with them because

1:06.6

they're brown and dirty. Children as young as 10 are trying to lighten their skin to avoid racial

1:11.8

bullying. Like, our children are learning, they're witnessing what is going on around them,

1:16.4

and they're learning it and they're perpetuating it. So to me, it's not a case of whether or not

1:21.5

we should be talking to our children about race and racism. It's a question of when, because

1:26.6

they're already learning it.

1:28.4

I think there's two things to unpack here, isn't there? It's a parent doing their own work,

1:32.9

because as we were talking about before, if you haven't done your own work and then you try

1:35.9

and have one of those conversations, I think it risks being performative. And as you say,

1:41.0

I think children pick up on energy over language. I think that's a huge part of it,

1:46.4

which we'll get into more and more. But how do people start to have these conversations with that

1:53.5

intention, you know, the positive intent that we were talking about not being performative or box-ticking

1:58.3

with their children? Like, would you start that straight
