Minnesota shooting suspect, Vance Belter, appeared in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota,

just hours ago.

He faces six federal charges, including stalking and murder with a firearm, which means prosecutors

could pursue the death penalty.

He will remain in custody.

The 57-year-old suspect is accused of murdering former State Minnesota House Speaker Melissa

Hortman and her husband, as well as attempting to murder State Senator John Hoffman and his wife,

both of whom survived after being shot multiple times.

Acting U.S. attorney for Minnesota, Joseph Thompson, said the suspect had, quote, voluminous

writings that included the names of lawmakers, but that authorities still hadn't determined

his motive.

Obviously, his primary motive was to go out and murder people.

They were all elected officials.
