My guest this week is Karen Canier.

Karen is a native of New York City.

She attended Cornell University, graduating with a BFA in Painting, and she went on to earn her MFA in

painting at Boston University.

She studied with Philip Guston and James Weeks at Boston University and with Jillian Peterson Craig, who you may remember from this show, at Cornell.

It was Jillian, actually, who recommended that I speak with Karen.

When Karen was 24, she won the Rome Prize Fellowship and spent a year at the

American Academy in Rome. She got a crash course on ancient Roman art that continues to influence her work to this day.

She and her husband have a home in Central Italy where they spend time painting every year.

As a matter of fact, one of Karen's painting she did while she was in Italy was recently published as the cover for John Ashbury's collection of poetry called The Commotion of Birds.

Karen works in mixed media. She uses collage, found media, and paint to create images that combine

modern figures with classical sculpture. She likes to play with the juxtaposition of ancient images in contemporary settings.
