Summary

In February 1978, five young men from Yuba County, California, drove to Chico to watch a college basketball game. They were close friends who thrived on routine and predictability, and they had a big basketball tournament of their own the next day. But after a quick stop for snacks, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Ted Weiher, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias vanished. Instead of driving south toward home, their car was found abandoned 70 miles in the opposite direction, stuck on a remote, snow-covered mountain road. What followed is one of the most baffling cases in true crime history. Months later, the remains of four of the men were discovered miles away from their vehicle, including one who had miraculously survived for weeks inside a well-stocked forest service trailer but failed to use the resources that could have saved him. Gary Mathias has never been found. We discuss the confusing timeline, the strange witness account of a man stranded nearby, and the lingering questions of why these men walked deeper into the freezing wilderness. Hi, Melissa. Hi, Mandy. How are you? I am doing well enjoying these April showers that we're

0:45.3

getting right now. Yeah, I'm in a closet because of those April showers and I'm remembering,

0:52.5

I'm adding more things to the list of why I don't like it when it starts getting hot. And this is one of them. It gets real hot in this room. And I'm wearing a sweatshirt. So that's my own fault, but I don't love it. So, yeah. But it got a little cooler and you know I love that. Yeah, it did. It's been breezy. It's been, I mean, it hasn't been too sunny, which has been nice. It's been helping it not be as hot. But yeah, it's been a little cooler. And yeah, it's been just a very nice start to spring, really. It really is. How's your gardening going? It's going so good. I have so many things going on right now. I have wildflowers, like a whole patch of them, just random. I decided to throw down a bunch of seeds and literally just yolo see what happens. And there's a lot coming up. And so I'm really excited to see. But I've been hitting up like every plant nursery in town and like anywhere near me and just collecting and gathering new plants yesterday.

I went and got some new flowers to plant and some garden beds out. I don't know. I'm really getting

1:49.8

into it this year, Melissa. I am like, I have to send you some pictures of everything we've been doing

in the yard. It looks amazing and there's like so many colorful flowers out there now.

1:58.9

That's nice. I truly feel like I'm entering my elderly era.

2:04.0

Well, here's the thing. An elderly gardener. As you get to, as we become women of a certain age,

2:10.4

really your two choices are gardening and birdwatching. Those are the only lane you really get

2:15.0

to decide. My mom's into birdwatching right now. I'm not, that's not really my thing. I'm not into watching them, but I'm getting close because I swear every time I go to the trail, I haven't been going every single morning lately, but when I go, I always see these cardinals, and I swear it's the same ones I see and I swear they they know me they

2:34.7

know who I am okay I'm not watching for birds okay but I am making friends with them well you

2:40.7

might go both lanes I didn't even know that was possible so well you can do it for me because I'm

2:46.8

not there yet but I'm getting there my mom's really into it and it's interesting she's like I think I hear a whatever and I'm like okay I, but I am getting there. My mom's really into it. And it's interesting. She's like,

2:51.4

I think I hear a whatever. And I'm like, okay, I can't prove you wrong. I actually love that for her. I'm not mad at it. She loves it. It's great. She has a little bird bath and everything. It's awesome. I think anything that brings you peace and stuff, this is the year to do it. I totally agree. Totally agree. So we have an absolutely baffling story for you guys today about five young men from Yuba County, California, who were reported missing after attending a college basketball game at California State University, Chico, in 1978. So before we get into what happened that night, let's talk a little about who these five men were,
