Hello and welcome to Hot Masterpiece Theater, the show where we have highbrow conversations about lowbrow TV, reality TV.

I'm comedian and culture critic Jolenta Greenberg, and I will be your reality TV dramaturg. Quick reminder,

a dramaturg is just a researcher that traditionally gives background information on theatrical

productions and helps put dramatic work into cultural context. A reality TV dramaturg does just that,

but for reality TV, because it is real art too. It's storytelling, plain and simple,

just like every other form of entertainment. And the characters we see on reality TV aren't

trashier or less complex than other characters and other forms of entertainment. They just

look a little different and have some unexplained wealth sometimes. But you've got to learn to look past that and see the archetypes.

Architectives are what we are talking about today and what we've been talking about for a while.

They're the different types of characters that we come across in reality TV.

They're the character blueprints that map out the general motivation and characteristics of any character you come across.

And we are still talking about friend archetypes, all the kinds of characters that show up

in reality TV and all stories as friends. And this week we are talking about a kind of mysterious

and somewhat withholding friend, the Magi. It's spelled M-A-G-I. I always thought the word was

magi, but I looked up a billion pronouncers and it's magi people. The magi is sort of like a

mysterious voice of reason. She's kind of all-knowing but also fickle about it. On workplace reality shows, she's

usually the boss who comes in and, like, has all the answers and maybe teaches a tough lesson or two.
