Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. We've all heard we're the sum of the five people with whom we spend the most time. This time around, we talk about how to curate the influence of people around us so we put control in our own hands rather than those of random circumstance. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Often attributed to Jim Rohn is the sentiment that we are the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. If this is true, how can we curate these influences to be positive rather than negative? Make a list of who's getting the most face time in your life and why. Keeping a calendar or journal that details what we do every day -- from social events to work -- helps. Evaluate areas on the list that could stand improvement. You can't isolate yourself from influence, so curate the best influences you can so you can determine your own future. Happy to be here with you kicking off the week with something quick,

something actionable and practical that you can implement right away that'll make you

a better human. I know that's grandiose, more magnetic and effective. How's that?

0:17.9

This comes from me today. I know a lot of times we have show guests, but I was talking with my friend

0:22.6

Jason Silva. He was back episode 603 if you remember. And we were talking about how we shape ourselves

0:29.2

by curating people around us. You've all heard you only go as high as your five closest friends.

0:33.4

That's a Jim Rohn quote, debatable where that originally came from, right? But we can actually

0:40.1

curate the people around us and that then creates who we are. Does that make sense? So every sort of

0:47.4

external influence that you have creates who you are, but we can curate our external influences.

0:52.4

So pay attention to who those people are. Who are your best influences? Who are the worst?

0:57.2

Make a list and be kind of brutally honest. It can be a little rough. Who are you spending the

1:01.7

most time with? And if you're not sure, go over your calendar. If you keep one, which I do,

1:06.4

or your journal, which you should keep and look at what you are doing socially and at work. Don't say,

1:11.6

oh, this doesn't count because it's work and I'm in the office and blah, blah, blah. No.

1:15.8

Who are you spending the most time with? Why are you spending the most time with them? What can you

1:20.2

do to change that? And remember, nothing is off the table because this is about who you become

1:25.8

in the future. And that's a little scary for some of us that are surrounded by people that we

1:30.7

don't like or that are mediocre or treating others poorly. You can't isolate yourself from

1:35.7

influence. So curate the best influences you can so that you can determine your own destiny.

1:42.1

I know that sounds a bit grandiose as well, but I'm here to tell you that it's extremely important.
