Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Ryan Michler (@orderofman) of Order of Man joins us to discuss how we can apply The After Action Review to better process -- and learn from -- our mistakes and successes. The Cheat Sheet: The After Action Review is a debriefing process that helps process recent successes and failures in order to learn from them. It consists of asking five questions: What did I get accomplished? What did I not accomplish? What did I do well? What did I not do well? What can I do better next time? Happy to be here with you kicking off the week with something quick and actionable that you can

0:08.0

implement right away that'll make you more magnetic and effective. Today we're talking with Ryan

0:12.7

Mickler, who was just on the show recently. Ryan, you've got the after-action review. What is it?

0:17.2

When do we use it and how can we use it for ourselves? Yeah, so the after-action review is something

0:21.7

that I learned about in my time in the military service. As an 18-year-old, I joined the military

0:26.6

with his 18 and as an 18-year-old, a punk kid who knew it all. Frankly, I'd roll my eyes and

0:31.6

really didn't get that heavily into this until I realized that, oh, this actually works.

0:36.9

Part of the problem in the military is we have a tendency sometimes to over-complicate things and

0:41.6

make it a little bit more difficult than it needs to be. But as I started to use this in my

0:45.7

everyday ordinary civilian life, I really saw a huge leap some bounds in the progress that I was making

0:52.1

and the goals that I was setting. So the after-action review is very simply something that I

0:56.5

do after every engagement, every conversation, every day, even after this podcast, I'm going to do

1:03.1

an after-action review. It's a series of five questions that I ask myself after, again,

1:08.2

every engagement that helps me measure what did I get done, what didn't I get done, where can I

1:12.9

improve? So the five questions, if you want me to run through those real quick, I can do that

1:15.9

right now. Yeah, let's do it. Right on. So the first question is what did I get accomplished?

1:21.2

So if I'm in a conversation or I'm on this podcast or at the end of the day, what is the thing that

1:26.4

I got accomplished that I set out to accomplish? Number two, what did I not accomplish? Is there

1:32.8

something that I tried to do or wanted to do or wanted to get done in the beginning of the day

1:37.1

that I wasn't able to complete? Number three is what did I do well? And this is an opportunity for

1:42.6

you to look at where you succeed, look at where you thrive. There might even be a set of skills that
