Summary

In this Minisode Monday, guest James Clear rejoins us to talk about how pre-commitment (aka implementation intentions) can make following through with a plan more likely. The Cheat Sheet: "Amateurs do things when it's easy -- when they feel motivated to do them. Professionals do things on a schedule." -James Clear Pre-commitment (aka implementation intentions) is the idea that if you lay out a plan for implementing your behavior with a very specific time, place, and location, you're much more likely to follow through. In one particular study, ninety percent of the group that made made a pre-commitment with implementation intentions were compliant with their goal. Discover how Jordan uses the pre-commitment to implementation intentions in his own schedule to get what some consider an outrageous amount of things done every week. Hey Jordan Harbinger here, welcome to Miniso D'Monday.

0:02.8

Happy to be here with you kicking off the week with something quick and actionable that you can

0:07.1

implement right away that will make you more magnetic and effective.

0:11.1

Today we're back with James Clear who is on the show recently discussing mental models and a

0:15.3

whole lot more. James, let's talk about pre-commitment. Sure, so pre-commitment is the idea, and this

0:21.7

is backed up by hundreds of research studies, that if you lay out a plan for implementing your

0:26.8

behavior in with a very specific time, place, location, you're much more likely to fall through.

0:32.0

So there have been a bunch of studies on this implementation intentions. This is another common phrase

0:36.4

that you'll hear with it. One of my favorite studies looked at health habits, and so they tracked

0:41.2

three different groups. They had the first group that came in that said, well, once you'd track

0:44.6

how often you exercise in the next two weeks. So that's the control group. Second group, they brought

0:49.4

in. They said, we also want you to track how often you exercise over the next two weeks, but they showed

0:54.3

them this motivational message and gave them pamphlets on heart health and why exercise was good,

0:58.8

and so that was the motivated group. And then the third group was equally motivated. They got the same

1:03.8

message, but they were told to do one thing differently, and that one thing was to fill out this

1:08.3

sentence. They'd said, I will partake in at least 20 minutes of exercise on this day at this time

1:14.7

in this place. So they had to fill out when, where, and how they were going to do it. And the group,

1:20.4

as they looked at the results after they looked at those three groups, the first group,

1:23.7

control group, about 30% of them worked out. The second group, the motivated group, again, about

1:29.5

30% of them worked out. So the motivation had basically no effect as soon as they left the

1:33.4

researchers laboratory. And the third group, the group that wrote down specifically when and where

1:38.3

they were going to work out, 90% of them worked out over the next two weeks. And so the idea here,
