Summary

Five years ago, Justin James and his wife Amanda opened a shoe factory outside of Asheville, North Carolina - a realization of Justin's life-long dream to design and manufacture the "best sneaker made in America.”

In fact, their company, "Opie Way," was having its best year to-date ... until Hurricane Helene.

With raw candor, Justin walks us through the early days of entrepreneurship and the recent devastation brought by Helene that has tested not only his professional fortitude but his personal faith.

This unique story of hope and grit highlights one man’s tenacity, the strength of North Carolina’s unique business culture and community, and the undeniable resilience of the American spirit - a conversation truly made to connect 'sole' to soul.

Hi, everyone. I have a very special story to share with you today, a story I stumbled upon

For some of you, you've done more than seen it. You've lived it. And I've so appreciated hearing

0:32.2

from you and learning about your experiences. For those of us on the outside, it's been heartbreaking

0:37.3

to watch and to feel so far

0:39.0

away. And there's this pervasive feeling that comes up in times like these of wanting to reach

0:44.8

through the screen and help. Well, we have found a way to do that today through one family's story.

0:50.8

Justin James and his wife Amanda started a shoe company called Opie Way.

0:55.6

This shoe company does something few others do.

0:58.4

They manufacture the coolest sneakers right here in the United States, in North Carolina, in fact, that's Justin and Amanda's home state.

1:05.7

The company was the realization of a lifelong dream and years and years of hard work, and now an unexpected turn

1:13.4

of events that has left the future uncertain. Now that you have the basics, I want you to hear

1:18.9

the rest from Justin, Justin James, the founder of Opie Way. Justin, of all businesses that you

1:25.5

could launch, of the many different products that you could

1:28.0

produce, why shoes? What was it about shoes that you said, you know what? This might be where I need to go.

1:35.4

Well, I tell this story all the time, but if you were to ask me when I was in middle school, what I was

1:40.2

going to do as a kid, I would tell you I was going to design shoes for Nike.

1:45.7

I was just way too infatuated with footwear from the time that I was a kid really.

1:51.8

So I followed that path, you know, all the way through school, went to college to design

1:57.8

shoes and got out of college and kind of realized, man, the mass manufacturing piece of footwear is something that really kind of took the breath out of me.
