The moment came to be on the blocks to get ready for swimming and racing this 200 metre individual medley

my first final at an Olympic Games.

Now I tried to take in the energy from the crowd but not let it overwhelm my confidence and my physical

ability that was going to win the race.

It wasn't the crowds who were going to win it for me.

It was me.

It was all on me.

And so as I powered down that last lap, you know, my lungs bursting and with a strong exhale

and, you know, I started to thrash a little bit because of fatigue and excitement.

And as my father used to say to me, head down, tailor, girl, and go for it.

So my father's words were in my ears, and I just went hell for leather, and could see my competitors,

and I tried my dandah's head down tailor saw my name listed first and then the time next to it a world record and I was just

shocked to start with but also elated and the icing on the cake was that it was a world record.

I thought, okay, that's my first gold medal.

I don't know how she does it, but Dawn Fraser just seems to be everywhere.

She shoved a toy kangaroo into my hands and get to the dice and then stand there

with this kangaroo. I put the kangaroo up in the air and so that became an iconic image,

the national anthem. The music was so stirring, the flags raising and then the crowd's cheering.

And then I did weep.
