The human centipede. This film was about a crazed surgeon called Joseph Heiter who

kidnaps three tourists and joins them surgically from mouth to anus.

The film in many ways felt like the natural evolution of the torture porn era which had been getting increasingly

extreme throughout that decade. But according to six, it was also inspired by the work of

Takache Mique and David Lynch as well as of course one of the most

notorious films of all time, Salo 120 Days of Sodom.

Naturally the human centipede did shock and

appall critics and audiences, but interestingly many horror fans felt that the

film didn't actually deliver on the extreme content that the title and the synopsis

promised and that actually the film turned out to be kind of tame.

As a response to this, Tom Six made a sequel, The Human Centipede 2.

This film made the first human centipede look like the magic roundabout.

Graphic depictions of violence, rape, infanticide, genital mutilation, torture, and of course the consumption of human feces

made this film truly one of the most shocking and controversial films since Salo. The film was so extreme that the

BBFC refused to give the human centipity to any classification, claiming it was simply too extreme and potentially obscene.
