Good morning. Welcome to Axios today. It's Tuesday, August 3rd. I'm Nyla Boudou. Here's

0:09.7

what you need to know today. A rare moment of discord between democratic leaders and the

0:14.2

president. Plus, openly trans and non-binary athletes make their mark in Tokyo. But

0:20.8

first, today's one big thing. Millions of Americans facing eviction.

0:29.4

The federal moratorium on evictions expired this past weekend, which put almost 4 million

0:34.7

people at risk of getting kicked out of their homes. And a few minutes, Jonathan Swan is

0:39.0

going to share his reporting on a rare rift between the Biden administration and Democrats

0:43.7

1:15.0

as well as a state moratorium, though the state moratorium expired about a month before

1:19.6

the federal moratorium. There's also some issues with rental assistance and this money

1:25.5

that's been distributed to cities and states to basically help people who've lost their

1:30.9

jobs or help people who are behind on their rent. I spoke with a woman named Maria who

1:35.7

lost her job about a year ago after contracting COVID-19. She applied to our local rent

1:41.8

relief program, which of course uses the money from this federal package. And it took her

1:46.3

about five months to receive the money. And so in that time, her landlord actually tried

1:51.8

to evict her, went through the court process at the very end. She was able to pay off the

1:55.4

balance, but you know, it was a really scary situation for her. She has two children.
