Summary

What was it like to be a space shuttle astronaut? Mike Mullane was selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 and was a part of the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions before retiring from NASA in 1990. Since then, he has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame and has won many awards. 0:53.0	I mean, I think everybody has followed astronauts over the years and thought of it as such a brave career, daring, all those kinds of things.
1:03.7	And I'm just wondering how you decided you wanted to become an astronaut.
1:08.3	Well, I was a child of the space race.
1:12.7	I had a fierce interest in flying even before the space race started. My dad was in the Air Force, and so I was around airplanes
1:19.4	all the time, and I wanted to grow up and be a pilot, be a fighter pilot. And then Sputnik was
1:24.4	launched in 1957 when I was 12 years old, and that started the space race.
1:29.5	And I was all in at that point.
1:31.2	I wanted to be John Glenn or Alan Shepard.
