In the preakness, he had to battle the two-year-old champion, the Bruters' Cup juvenile winner, the Bluegrass winner, good magic, fought him tooth and nail every step the way, and then was able to put him away, draw away, hold off the closers. And he had a little bit more in the tank than it looked like by the sheer margin because Mike Smith put him in hand about 50 yards from the wire. There was a little bit more there if he needed it. It is a concern, though, as game as he was, as classy as he was, the fact that he has

been unable to replicate his Santa Anita Derby speed figure, which was at a mile and eighth

in the two longer races in the Triple Crown, and in both those races in the Triple Crown,

even though he had to deal with that pace pressure, he will also benefit it from strong

biases and by sloppy sealed surfaces that he clearly handles very well and that some of

his rivals may not have handled as well.
