Summary

France and Britain are caught up in disagreements over who needs to do what to stop any more people dying on small boats crossing between the two countries. 27 people were killed in the English Channel on Wednesday, hoping to migrate to the UK. Even after the tragedy, people continue to attempt the dangerous journey in unsafe dinghies. Ros Atkins looks into this political and humanitarian issue

This time, it's migrants crossing the English Channel.

This is something that has been ballooning.

An unthinkable tragedy.

The English Channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

And on Wednesday, at least 27 people drowned

as they tried to cross it from France to the UK.

That evening, we heard from the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

It's an appalling thing that they have suffered.

But I also want to say that this disaster

underscores how dangerous it is to cross the channel in this way.

But many are risking this journey over 25,000 people this year

and despite British promises to make this route unviable,

the numbers are going up.

And the starting point of this crossing,

the North Coast of France, is coming under more and more scrutiny.

It's simply not credible that a thousand people can

muster on the French beaches and the French not spot them as they get into small bates.
