Hi, my name is Alex, and my question is, what makes blood cells and how does it do that? Thank you.

0:48.2

So what makes blood vessels, Alex? Well, blood is made of cells and plasma. Plasma's like a yellow fluid. It's got nutrients and

0:57.0

proteins and all the things in there that keep you alive. Different types of blood cells have different

1:02.1

jobs. Red blood cells, they carry oxygen. Different parts of your body needs this to keep your muscles

1:08.6

moving, your brain working. So that's the red blood

1:11.6

cells. The white blood cells really important. They're part of your immune system. They help fight

1:15.5

bacteria. They get to work if there's an invader, if there's a virus that's trying to

1:22.2

try to get at you, that's trying to cause you some harm. Also in your blood, you've got platelets.

1:27.3

They're tiny cells.

1:28.6

They are oval shaped and they help to clog up your blood when you're bleeding. Now, cells are made in the

1:36.6

liver and in the spleen before you're born, but you always need to make new cells, new blood cells,

1:42.3

and they're normally made in the bone marrow,

1:49.3

which is the soft, spongy tissue right in the middle of your bones.

1:53.4

So those are the different cells that make up your blood, Alex.

1:55.6

Thank you very much for the question.

1:58.3

Here is one from Imogen.

1:59.5

Who wants to know? What exactly would happen to a human in space without a space suit?

2:04.8

Ooh.

2:05.9

All right.
