Summary

Get ready for another BIG and BRILLIANT journey into the world of science on this week’s Science Weekly! We’re asking a huge question… we talk about science every week, but what actually is it?

In Science in the News, researchers reveal that cats were domesticated much earlier than anyone thought, lightning has been spotted on Mars for the very first time, and Allowen Evin joins Dan to dig up a MASSIVE discovery about how dogs first transformed from wolves into the pets we know today!

Then it’s time for your questions! William wants to know the difference between the flu and the common cold, and Dr Sarah Casewell breaks down what science really is.

Dangerous Dan is back with one of the fiercest ancient predators ever — the smilodon, the gigantic sabre-toothed cat with jaws you definitely wouldn’t want to meet.

And in Battle of the Sciences, we’re joined by science royalty… astronaut Tim Peake! He reveals what life is really like when you’re floating hundreds of kilometres above Earth.

Plus, in Marvellous Missions, we blast off through a wormhole to Deep Space High as Principal Pulsar and the class head to the International Space Station for an out-of-this-world lesson.

This week, we learn about:
– How and when cats were first domesticated
– The first lightning ever seen on Mars
– How ancient wolves became modern dogs
– What separates the flu from a common cold
– What it’s really like to live in space with Tim Peake

All that and more on this week’s Science Weekly!

Welcome along, explorer. My name's Dan. It's time to travel around the world and blast off out of it to search for some incredible science secrets hurtling through the universe. Let's get on with a brand new fun kids science weekly.

0:16.9

This week, around here, you know, it's in the name we talk about science every week.

0:23.1

But do you actually know what it means?

0:26.5

When I find a planet orbiting another star, I'm using physics and astronomy to see the planet and the star,

0:36.3

but I'm using chemistry to understand what the atmosphere of the planet and the star, but I'm using chemistry to understand what the atmosphere

0:39.5

of the planet and the star are made up of. I'm using biology if I'm thinking about whether life

0:45.5

could survive on that planet. Also, we'll travel back 10,000 years to meet a world famous beast

0:52.6

who roamed and snarled their way across the Americas,

0:56.1

and we're going big, get ready to launch into space with an actual astronaut. Tim Peake reveals

1:02.0

what it's really like to live among the stars. For us on the space station, we get up at seven

1:08.6

in the morning, we just get to work, we work about 12 hours,

1:12.2

have dinner and then repeat the same again the next day. It's a busy, busy place. We're there

1:17.0

to work really hard. We try and do about 250 experiments in every six-month period.

1:24.1

That's all on the way in a brand new Fun Kids' Science Weekly.

1:33.8

And let's start with your science in the news.

1:40.4

It turns out cats decided to become pets much later than scientists originally thought.

1:47.0

Way back, years and years ago, cats were wild hunters, and then over time, we domesticated them to be the pampered pets that you might have today. I know I do. She's very

hissy and scratchy. Shout out to Tiggie the Teratabby, by the way. But experts thought that

1:57.8

that change was 10,000 years ago. According to new research, however, with bones found in the ground in Africa, it showed wild cats were around thousands of years later than we first thought, which means they were domesticated much later than we thought as well. Cats are quite new, which actually makes sense, right?

2:19.0

Typical, isn't it? Cats are quite fussy, and they took their time to decide whether or not they liked humans.

2:26.1

Also, lightning has been seen on Mars for the first time. That's what scientists think they've seen.

2:32.8

NASA's Perseverance Rover touched down on Mars in 2021,
