Mr. Hill also wrote the film, which follows 13-year-old Stevie, who spends his summers in 90s-era Los Angeles,

navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.

Mid-90s marks Mr. Hill's directorial debut.

Following a recent screening of the film at the DGA Theater in New York, Mr. Hill spoke with director Bennett Miller about filming mid-90s.

During their conversation, Mr. Hill discusses why he loved working with first-time actors,

tips he received from Martin Scorsese and moderator Bennett Miller,

and why his rehearsal process consisted of taking away the cast's phones and just talking.

How did you know how to make this movie?

Well, first of all, a lot of this stuff is just, sometimes it's odd or or whatever but it really is an honor to be here

at this guild like at the director's guild and with my friend Bennett who is a really good man um

he's uh i learned a lot from you i learned a lot i i don't know as you know knowing well, I'm a cinephile and I love filmmaking and

hounded you all the time for answers and thoughts. We did Moneyball together. Sorry. Yeah,

I acted for Bennett in his wonderful film Moneyball. And the, I don't know, the great benefit, I sort of fell into a surprise

15-year acting career and I love it. And I got to work with almost all of my heroes, you know,
