In some ways, I think you can think of the Microsoft, the antitrust battles that started in the 1990s,

as sort of technology's first collision with the modern world as we know it.

The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age. And he has a warning for big tech.

Well, I think whether you're Amazon or Facebook or Microsoft or anyone else, first I think we

have to recognize that the public wants to know more about what we're doing and how we're

doing it.

We have to step up to more transparency.

I think we have to be prepared to take more steps to protect the privacy of people's information.

He's worked at Microsoft for more than a quarter century

and learned the lessons of battling with the government over antitrust issues.

He says it's time to start embracing regulation. We need to keep doing more, but I also think we need

to help governments do more. And you see whether it's at Facebook or elsewhere, you see companies

starting to say regulation is needed, regulation will be good.

That's a good first step.

Until companies are putting specific ideas on the table, until we're engaging in that level

of conversation, I don't think we're doing enough.
