Summary

Jack Z. Bratich chats about the concept of "microfascism," a term coined by Deleuze as part of their project of tracing “the genealogy and the permanence of certain fascist machineries” in order “to refuse to allow any fascist formula to slip by, on whatever scale it may manifest itself, including within the scale of the family or even within our own personal economy." Happy Thanksiving!

The concept suggests that fascist impulses don't just come from "above" (authoritarian leaders) but can emerge from "below" in how people treat each other daily. Deleuze and Guattari believed everyone has some "fascist" potential—desires for domination, control, or submission. Bratich's work looks at the idea in the current context of MAGA, stochastic terrorism, and the manosphere.

0:31.0

which we talked about on the show years ago with Natasha Leonard.

0:34.8

But we'll give people a refresher on this idea of micro-fascism. Before we talk about that, you are a professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, as was another anti-fascist scholar, Mark Bray. And, uh, he was in the news recently because he, he fled the country. I didn't read too much into that. I've read Mark Bray's anti-fascist handbook and appreciate his work. But yeah, what's the story with that? What happened with Mark Bray? Yeah, yeah, Mark's a pal and a colleague. And, you know, about three weeks before this even happened, I, you know, I ran into him in the halls. He was going to teach his class. I was going to teach mine. And so, you know, he blurbed my book, too. So I've known him for, for some years.

1:16.9

And basically what happened was the, you know, the Kirkians, the Turning Point USA chapter of Rutgers,

1:24.4

basically kind of inherited a list from, I think, the kind of older Horowitz

1:29.1

was a viewpoint that kind of site that targets enemy combatant intellectuals.

1:37.6

And so there's a list of like seven folks, and Mark is on that list.

1:41.4

And so they, because it was right after the designation, the terrorism designation of Antifa.

1:49.6

And so he has a book with that title, you know, in it.

1:53.2

And so they found it.

1:54.8

They asked for him.

1:56.1

They sort of like started, you know, I think network swarming him in order to get him to get fired, and then

2:03.0

and then the death threats came. And so, so before, you know, I mean, it seems like the

2:09.1

administration didn't know how to handle this. So he, of course, feared for his life,

2:14.0

the life of his immediate family. And so so yeah they um they they they fled the country

2:19.8

and now he's teaching remotely from oh wow yeah yeah all right so he's still at teaching at ruckers

2:25.0

but he's just out of the country out of the country and yeah teaching online is there like a

2:29.1

campaign to bring him back in some way or is this just he's just're just like letting people know I'm getting away from this harassment?

2:36.9

Yeah, yeah.
