TD Bingham and I went out to the adjustment center yard there in San

Quentin, Mo Farrell and Bosco, Emmy had hit Hawaiian John. Mo had told me that

he was going to hit Hawaiian John, and I told him, no, you're not. He's an associate.

He hit him anyway. They hit him 18 times, but they didn't kill him. So as soon as

I cleared TD and I for the yard, we went out to the yard. Now, you remember the

yard in San Quentin Adjustment Center, the guard's shack was just up off the

yard. I mean, it was no more than 12 feet off the ground, and the fences went

right up underneath it. So we were in the center yard. They had three yards, and it

was right in front of death row, but they started with a shotgun, and then they

would go to the mini-14. In this case, TD and I both took five rounds from that

shotgun in the back.

The thing that stopped us was that that damn shot is so hot and it's burning you. So

each time you get shot, you've got all that lead in you, and it's on fire, and it's

burning you. And the only reason it didn't hit our heart or our lungs was because

TD and I both were lifting an iron at the time. So we had a lot of muscle over our

backs, and that's the only thing that stopped that. So the key to survival there,

and the night fight I was in with Yogi, was to keep moving. Now, I took an M-14

slug on my back that day, and it obviously put me down, but not before I

engaged Yogi, and we did our dance in the context of that yard. I mean, you just

had to keep moving, and you knew that.
