When Michael Steyer was a lead singer and lyricist for the band REM, it was clear he had talents and interests beyond music.

He was deeply involved in crafting the album covers and other aspects of the band's visual identity.

In 1998, he published his first photo book and in recent years, he's published several more books of photography.

His latest is an untitled book of portraits and still lives, the making of which was complicated in interesting ways by COVID.

He joins me now to talk about his practice of photography and about his career as a musician and an artist.
