Summary
The almighty taper is a thing of beauty. Most experienced runners, and certainly any runner who's trained with a coach, knows about this masterpiece of training theory. No amount or type of training, no training regimen, however well executed, will fulfill its potential unless it ends with the appropriate taper period.
If you're not familiar with the idea of tapering for a goal race, this episode will convince you never to omit this from another training cycle. If you are familiar with tapering, it will be a reminder and refresher of all that is required for the optimal taper.

| 0:39.6 | Did you watch the athletes in the Olympics breaking records, even records that they themselves had |

| 1:01.8 | every time out, but that's not possible. But with an effective use of periodization, we can |
| 1:08.3 | manipulate our ability to perform, landing it on the date of our goal race. |
| 1:13.9 | Even an athlete at the top tier, one who's been racing for years, who set personal best |
| 1:19.9 | hundreds of times, still manages to keep doing it and to do it on the single most important |
| 1:26.2 | occasion. This doesn't happen by chance. |
| 1:29.5 | Tapering on top of an effective race schedule, I mean race cycle, is the secret. In the last |
| 1:36.8 | episode, I mentioned periodization, training in cycles to give the body time to recover before |
| 1:41.9 | bringing on new stress, often greater stress than ever before. |
| 1:46.3 | But after an appropriate recovery phase and a gradual buildup, this is possible because of that recovery, of this total recovery. |
| 1:55.5 | As a result of the last intense cycle and recovery from that cycle, the athlete's body should be ready to perform |
| 2:03.1 | at an even higher level than in that last goal race. Now, there's much that goes into any race, |
| 2:10.6 | and the longer the race, as we all know, all too well, the more there is that can go wrong. |
| 2:16.6 | But at the elite level, they control for everything, |
| 2:20.0 | right? From nutrition to massages, to acupuncture, to biohacking, sleep, and it works. Arguably, |
