Today, big court losses for meta have Anderlists saying this is the big tobacco moment for social media.

Following on the news we mentioned yesterday of a jury in the U.S. state of New Mexico finding meta guilty

of misleading users about the safety of Facebook and Instagram. That was just about meta,

and that was just about product safety. Wednesday afternoon, there was a second jury finding

in a case in Los Angeles. This one has a lower penalty, but it seems to have a bigger impact.

In this Los Angeles case, the jury determined that META and Google were negligent for not

warning users of the dangers associated with, in META's case, Instagram, and Google's

case, YouTube.

The damages awarded in this case so far are $3 million in compensatory damages. That's quite a bit less than the $350 million

in the New Mexico case, but we're not done yet. There is still the punitive damages. Meta is on the

hook to pay 70% of the 3 million and Google will pay the remaining

30%. Snap and ByteDance were both part of this case originally, but they settled out of court.
