And this is BBC OS Conversations Messages for those lost in Ukraine.

As the bloody battles continue following the Russian forces attack on Ukraine,

we share memories from people who've lost friends, family and colleagues.

Max is a really painful loss for me because he is the person who saved my life.

She was an incredible woman and a lot of things were built by her.

She was a very good father and for sure it's a very unique pain for all of us.

The messages are for people from all walks of life, a toy maker, a photographer, a city mayor, an engineer, soldiers and journalists.

But before we play you these, we ask James Waterhouse, the BBC's correspondent in Kiev, to spend a couple of minutes giving us a bit of context to the devastation that's been witnessed.

When it comes to working out the numbers of people who've been killed in this war, it's always difficult.

Reason being both sides distort the figures to try and confuse each other.

So in terms of soldiers, well, if we take an estimate most recently by the United Kingdom,

they think more than 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.

The Ukrainians, for example, think it's more than double that or claim it's more than double that.

Same on the other side. Now, President Zelensky, most recently, suggested that up to 100 Ukrainian soldiers were dying every day in the Eastern Donbass region,

where fighting is most concentrated.

And then you have civilians. The latest figures from the United Nations suggest more than 4,000 people have been killed so far.

That figure will almost certainly be higher.
