Welcome to Manager Tools, although probably not the way most of the professional

world is, right? I mean, today it seems almost like some folks believe that mentoring

takes the place of effective management yeah it's almost like a like a substitute

right mentors are supposed to coach and develop and give feedback.

And the tone of the public conversation is that the mentor's role as, quote unquote, not the boss,

gives them somehow the special ability to do that.

And we think that every manager, the manager should be doing that, right?

I have been stunned at reading this.

There's this implication.

Harvard Business has we had an article about mentoring as a solution.

It's like, no, that's as a solution. It's like no that's just basic

management. It's literally we're trying so hard today to avoid holding managers

accountable for what managers supposed to do in terms of holding people

accountable and developing

improving results and improving performance and so on

that we're willing to invent other people having their

responsibilities is weird.

Now look we do believe in mentoring, no question.
