It was August 20th, 1989.

45-year-old Jose Menendez and his 47-year-old wife, Kitty, were sitting in the TV room at the back of their palatial home in Beverly Hills, located at 722 North Elm Drive.

It looked like they were having a casual movie night.

I should say from the beginning,

this case has received huge publicity over the years.

Every element of what was going on that night has been debated.

And there's a big debate over the simplest facts, such as, were they sitting and eating

ice cream peacefully or were they locked in a potentially life and death confrontational battle

with their two sons?

So I'm going to try my best to stick to the facts. We know that there

were empty glasses in the TV room and in the kitchen with the remains of blueberries and what

looked like ice cream or possibly whipped cream. At around 10 p.m., killers armed with shotguns burst into the room. There's no mystery

who done it here. We know that the killers were Kitty and Jose's sons, 21-year-old Lyle, and 18-year-old

Eric. There's no other way to put this. This was a massacre. Jose was shot six times. Later, experts would testify that Jose was shot at least once in the thigh,

but that they believed this was done post-mortem. Later, forensic experts were able to figure out the path the killers had taken.

They believed they entered from the terrace doors.

They came up behind the sofa,

where Kitty and Jose were sitting. They shot Jose point blank in the back of the head. The first round of shots struck Kitty in her chest, right arm, left hip, and left leg. At some point, after Kitty had been shot multiple times,

she started crawling on the floor.

Her killer then took the time to reload their weapon

and came back and fired the final kill shot into her face.

At 1147 p.m., a 911 dispatcher got an emergency call concerning a possible shooting.
