And on today's page, Benachat 24, we come across an interesting scenario.

Sometimes we know the vessel the priests used to hold a meal offering had several different

compartments.

So the rabbis ask on today's duff, here's an interesting what if.

Imagine they pose that the meal offering

was divided into two parts and one of them became tamme, ritually defiled. Then this impure

offering is put in the same vessel with perfect pure offerings. The pure offerings are in

different compartments. What happens then? Easy enough. Just because the two offerings are in different compartments. What happens then?

Easy enough, just because the two offerings are in different compartments of the same vessel shouldn't mean that the impure one somehow defiles the pure one.

They're not touching.

Cool, we get that.

But Rava kicks things a step further.

What he asks happens if a person who is impure grabs the vessel touching only the part

that is already ritually defiled. Do we say, A, that these two compartments are two parts of the same

singular vessel, so by touching any part of that vessel, he renders everything in it ritually impure? Or do we say that

because he only touched the part that was already ritually impure, he couldn't possibly make it

any more impure, and therefore the pure part isn't affected? It will shock you, shock you, I say,

to learn that the daph doesn't really give a concrete definitive

answer, but it does deliver, as always, a profound meditation on human nature.

Because it's not stretching things too much or getting too cute with it to say that we are all,

really, like that bifurcated vessel.
