That brings you just one rare page of Talmud each day.

And on today's page, Menachot 101, we are indeed talking

rare things. How rare? Behold. When someone donated an animal to the temple as a sacrifice,

it immediately became fully sanctified. It could not be redeemed, by which we mean to say it could not be exchanged for money

and used for any other more mundane purposes. And on today's page, the rabbis explain this idea.

The restriction on redeeming some things like temple vessels say or frankincense is rabbinic in

origin. It's not in the Torah. Why then did the rabbi's rule that

redemption was forbidden? Well, because these things like the frankincense or the vessels or some

kinds of unblemished wood, were so rare and so hard to find that if they could be redeemed,

people would just hoard them,

and then the temple wouldn't have enough of them to go around.

It's kind of an amazing thought.

Things that are just so rare that special rules have to be written into place to preserve them.

It's hard for us to fathom, because, after all, we are used to going on

Amazon or wherever, clicking a button, and having whatever we would like delivered straight to

our homes, often that same day. But today's stuff reminds us that there are things out there

that are truly rare, truly hard to find, and truly
