Sometimes when I'm in the shower,

and the water trickles down from my hair, past my eyebrows and into my eyes, and begins to sting a little.

I remember what my teacher said.

My teacher who gave me swimming lessons at a local pool,

not a public pool, you had to have a membership for that one.

But her name was Missy.

when the chlorinated water would get in my eyes

and I would complain that it stung

and scrunch my eyes really tight. It didn't help. It was just a natural

reflex. Something told me that if I scrunched my eyes, it might make it better.

But I remember Missy saying to just relax my eyelids

and gently wipe a finger,

swipe my fingers over them,

starting from my nose, all the way to my temples.

And truth be told, my eyes still stung, but for some reason that always made me feel better.

Same within the shower, I will relax my eyelids and gently wipe from the corners of my eyes, closest to my nose, all the way to the corners, closest to my temple.

And it feels a little bit like it helps, though I'm still not sure.

Mostly what it does is take me back in time, back to those days spent swimming in the pool.
