I'm your host, Gold Star Mother Susan Price, and this is America Outloud.

Every year during the month of May, Americans remember and celebrate the lives of our fallen heroes and their sacrifices during this bittersweet memorial holiday.

History proves that during times of peace, sons lay their fathers to rest,

and during times of war, fathers lay their sons to rest.

Our military represents less than 1% of our nation in every uniform,

and they give a voice as well as protect and preserve our United States Constitution

and the sovereignty for the other 99% of Americans.

Statistics show that approximately 0.25% were all Americans who served in the military

over the past century were killed in battle while over 1.3 million U.S. service members died in all wars since 1775.

Over 7,000 United States service members died in operations tied to the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq alone.

And yet these numbers, approximately 5,400,

died during a hostile action. My son was one of those souls who served our nation in uniform

for over 12 years, yet it was to be his life's career.

Marine gunnery sergeant Aaron Michael Kennefic wanted to be a part of something far greater than

himself and lived and died with honor and a passion-filled purpose.

You see, for every day is Memorial Day in the lives among America's Gold Star families.

And should you ever meet one of us in person, you will witness a certain measure of grief within the windows of our soul.
