In this episode of Boss Files, Melinda Gates invites us on her personal journey.

Why she's dedicated her life's work to achieving equality for all women.

She documents her path in her new book, The Moment of Lift.

Her message, when we lift up women, we lift up humanity.

I'm an ardent feminist because I know that when you lift up women,

they invest in everybody else and they lift up society.

Gates tells me she's committed to eliminating the barriers

women face around the world, especially unpaid labor,

access to contraceptives and discrimination at work.

And she dives deep into her personal struggle advocating for contraceptives and her Catholic faith. So to have your own church

turn around and say that about you, it was, it hurt. I mean, it was a punch in the gut,

but I also knew it was coming. I expected it because I knew that we disagreed. And so I expected it.

And a little bit, I could say, well, it means that I'm doing something important if they're willing

to attack me. Plus, from being one of the first female MBA employees at Microsoft to establishing

a more equal partnership at home with her husband, Bill Gates, and how she found

her full self again after having children.

So why did Melinda Gates choose this moment to really open up?

I ask her as we sit down for a conversation on her book tour in her hometown of Dallas, Texas.
