Summary

Examining the Bible to find out who Melchizedek was and how he relates to Jesus. Some think he was a Christophany and others that he is just a type of Christ. I will lay out some reasons for why I see him as a type of Christ and we will learn some principles to add to our tool kit for finding other types of Christ in the Old Testament. Melchizedek shows up out of nowhere in Genesis 14 and then, in Psalm 110 we hear a promise from God that the Messiah will be a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Finally, the book of Hebrews offers us divinely inspired commentary on the nature of Melchizedek, and that is where the real debate lies. Is Hebrews speaking of Melchizedek in a literal sense or in a literary sense when it says "without father without mother and without genealogy"?

0:11.8	Old Testament we're approaching the issue of Melkizodek.
0:15.0	This is a hotly debated guy. The question is, how is Melkizodek a type of Christ and is he actually Jesus because a lot of people think he's actually Jesus
0:27.2	Literally showing up a Christophony in the Old Testament and so I'll unpack all these ideas but I I think personally, and I could be wrong here, this is my opinion, is that Melkizadak gives us kind of like a template for one of the ways in which we will look for other types of Jesus in the Old Testament
0:44.0	because it's like we're saying hey if this is how God shows us about Jesus in the Old Testament
0:49.6	through Melkizadik then maybe he does the same type of thing through other people in the Old Testament.

0:56.5	So I'm going to try to showcase those things for you to look at.
1:00.6	Now, Melkizadik, it's difficult sometimes for the brain to think about Melkizadik, but it's not difficult to get the passages. There's only four passages in question dealing with Melkizadik. The first time he shows up is in Genesis 14. This is where he shows up and he meets Abraham.
1:17.0	So we read in Genesis 14, we read about the story of how Lott and his people, Lott and the people he's living with, they were
1:25.0	taken captive by some foreign king and Abraham goes with his army and he
1:35.0	saves lot and brings him back and he's coming on his way back from this battle with all these multiple kings
1:38.0	that just fought and we pick up on the story in verse 17 of Genesis 14
1:42.0	it says after his return from the defeat of
1:44.6	Chedor Leomer and the kings who were with him the king of Sodom went out to
1:49.7	meet him at the valley of Sheva that that is the King's Valley. And Melkizadek, and that's the first time he shows up in the Bible,
1:58.2	Melkizadek King of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was a priest, he was priest, excuse me, of God most high.
2:07.0	And he blessed him and said, Blessed be Abram by God most high, possessor of heaven and earth, and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.
