I'm Elizabeth Slattery and welcome to SCOTUS 101, where we break down what's happening at the Supreme Court, what the justices are up to, and other things related to our favorite branch of government.

0:13.4

This week, we're talking about opinions on Obamacare and Guns, and I also spoke with former Wisconsin Solicitor General, Misha Saitland. So as I mentioned in last

0:23.2

week's episode, I will be leaving the Heritage Foundation. So two of my colleagues will be taking

0:27.6

the reins of SCOTUS 101. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce them before we get

0:32.6

into what's happening at the court this week. So John Carlo Canaparo and Amy Swear are both scholars

0:39.1

in Heritage's Legal Center. John Carlo hails from the Bay Area and completed a clerkship for a

0:44.7

district court judge in Miami not long ago. Now, as a Kentuckian, I have to point out that he's

0:50.5

an accomplished equestrian. So, John Carlo, would you consider yourself a workhorse or a

0:55.9

show pony? Definitely a workhorse. There's not much showy over here. And Amy Swearer is a bit of an

1:03.4

American nomad. She spent time during her childhood in Nebraska, go cornhuskers, South Carolina, and

1:09.5

Washington State. And Amy is Heritage's resident gun expert and enthusiast.

1:14.1

So I'm sure she'll have a thing or two to say about the New York City gun case the

1:17.8

justices punted on this week.

1:19.7

So to kick things off, I wanted to pose a couple of questions to the two of you.

1:24.6

So first up, who is your favorite writer on the court? Does this have to be current

1:31.5

Supreme Court justices? Yeah, let's go with current. Okay, because if not, then the,

1:38.1

the immediate answer is Scalia. So unpopular. That is the right answer. Yes, it is. It is.

1:45.0

So even though I disagree with Elena Kagan on quite a number of things, I think she is a very good

1:53.2

and clear writer.

1:55.6

She has opinions that I found sort of enjoyable and easy to read.

1:59.8

Even though I often disagree with her, I would go with Justice Kagan.

2:04.3

You know, this is going to be very unoriginal, but I will also go with Justice Kagan and point out that she, like Scalia, can from time to time, really turn a phrase and they're just a joy to read.
