FBI director Christopher Ray announcing that he will be stepping down.

Speaking at an FBI town hall this afternoon,

Ray told Bureau employees that after weeks of thought,

he has decided to resign at the end of the Biden

administration. He said in part, quote, my goal is to keep the focus on our mission, the indispensable

work you're doing on behalf of the American people every day. In my view, resigning is the best way

to avoid dragging the Bureau deeper into the fray while reinforcing the values and principles

that are so important to how we do our work. Ray's announcement comes two and a half weeks

after President-elect Trump announced he was picking Cash Patel to serve as FBI director,

despite Ray's 10-year term not expiring for more than two years. Ray was appointed by Mr. Trump in 2017 after then-President Trump fired James Comey as FBI director.
