Summary

For some people that’s a dystopian vision. But for Cristóbal Valenzuela, it’s a mission statement: Valenzuela is the co-founder and CEO of Runway, an AI startup that wants to radically change the way movies and TV are made. Right now the buzzy company - currently valued at $1.5 billion - helps TV shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once create special effects at a fraction of the traditional cost. But Valenzuela has much bigger ambitions for his product. And he thinks generative AI will be a major part of the stuff we watch in the near future. He talks to Vox’s Peter Kafka about the promise of that prediction — and the costs. tibca film festival things I was at this week,

1:13.3

it was great to see you. And if not, I'm glad you're listening anyway. As you probably know,

1:18.3

Twitter is no longer a good place to tell people about things you like, like Recode Media.

1:23.2

So it's become harder for me to tell people about Recode Media, and that's a bummer because I think

1:27.4

we've had some really strong episodes lately. So if you're listening to this podcast and you like it, I'm just going to ask you to tell someone else about it. You can tweet about it if you want. You can text someone. You can skywrite. These things are not mutually exclusive. And whatever you do, we are grateful. Thank you. Okay, in a minute, I'm going

1:46.3

to talk to Christobal Valenzuela. He is the CEO of Runway ML, which is one of the busier AI

1:51.7

startups, which is saying something in the buzzy AI startup phase we're in. And I wanted to talk

1:56.6

to him because I'm interested in AI like everyone else, at least everyone else listening to this

2:01.0

podcast, but also because the stuff that Runway does has real obvious implications for TV and

2:05.7

video, and I wanted to get a sense of how far away companies like Runway are from totally

2:11.2

remaking those industries and what that means. So that's that conversation we're going to have

2:15.7

also of note recorded this a few weeks ago.

2:18.3

And when we were talking, Runway had been valued at $500 million, which seems suspiciously low for a busy AI startup.

2:25.3

That has reportedly been fixed.
