Summary

Emily Fletcher is the founder of Ziva Meditation, the creator of The Ziva Technique that focuses on mindfulness, meditation and manifesting. She’s also created the world’s first online meditation training. Her work has been featured in national newspapers and magazines, as well as on television. She is regarded as a leading expert in meditation for high performance.

Her meditation journey began on Broadway and led her to India. Over the past decade, she has been named one of the top 100 women in wellness to watch, has taught more than 15,000 students around the world, and has spoken on meditation for performance at Google, Harvard Business School, Viacom and Wanderlust.

She’s taught Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award-winners, as well as NBA players, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and busy parents that meditation is a performance tool. The Ziva style is entertaining, accessible and easy to adopt.

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we talk about how releasing the stress from your past is essential and controlling your way through your life just doesn’t work. Meditation encompasses “the art and the beauty and the power of surrender.” And by manifesting—getting intentional about what you want your life to look like—you can consciously create a life you love.

Today's cool fact of the day is that regular meditation leads to neuroplasticity in your

0:21.6

brain.

0:22.6

Neuroscientists at the University of Wisconsin found that people who meditate on a regular

0:27.1

basis have high levels of gamma wave activity.

0:30.3

That activity allows those frequent meditators to better control their thoughts and their

0:34.8

reactivity.

0:35.8

Other studies have found that those high levels of gamma waves actually lead to neuroplasticity.

0:41.3

That's, if you wanted the official definition, it's the brain's ability to change structurally

0:46.6

and functionally on the basis of environmental input.

0:51.1

Traditional neuroscience believes that you can't train up gamma with neurofeedback.

0:58.4

However, that is something that we built proprietary hardware and software to do at 40 years

a cent.

1:04.8

My neuroscience facility.

1:05.8

I can show you pictures of my gamma waves that do go up when I do them.

1:09.6

Even if I didn't have neurofeedback, it turns out meditation itself, when you are

1:13.1

good at it, when you practice it regularly, the way an advanced Zen meditator would, for

1:18.2

instance, can raise these high frequency brain waves.

1:22.4

You could also, if you're a biohacker like me, run an electrical current over your brain

1:27.5

in the gamma frequency range, which I may or may not have been doing for quite a few years,

1:32.0

in which we also do at 40 years of Zen.

1:34.8

So gamma is the new alpha, I like to say.
