The New York Times is suing Pete Hegseth over the Pentagon’s new policy severely limiting press access. Dina Doll reports how this lawsuit comes at a critical moment with reliable reporting desperately needed and how these restrictions have already led to a Pentagon briefing dominated by softball questions from figures like Matt Gaetz. The New York Times has filed a significant lawsuit against the Department of Defense for their

0:04.6

authoritarian tactics. The measures they implemented to restrict free press and to restrict

0:11.2

the flow of information to the American public about what the Pentagon was or wasn't doing.

0:17.6

The New York Times has sued the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, and Sean

0:21.2

Pernell in their official capacities. The New York Times, of course, no stranger to defending

0:27.0

freedom of the press. Two Supreme Court landmark cases are a result of their lawsuits. My name

0:34.4

is Dean Adzall with the Midas Touch Network. Let's get into this. Now, of course, we saw the

0:39.1

interplay about the new policies that are at issue in this lawsuit and the effect of them with the

0:46.2

most recent Pentagon briefing where all of the traditional news outlets that are credible, experienced were gone and instead were replaced

0:57.8

with the Matt Gates, Laura Loomers, and Far Right or MAGA reporters. And there was a huge

1:04.5

difference into what kind of information the American public received, especially at this critical time where Trump

1:13.1

puts out a post saying Venezuelan heirs are going to be closed. The American public

1:20.5

certainly wants this kind of information. Now, the new policy that was implemented and that was

1:27.2

at issue basically restricted the reporters

1:30.5

from getting any unauthorized information from members of the Department of Defense and for

1:37.8

receiving any tips. Basically, the only information that the reporters could report on was authorized information. Now, as you can imagine, that severely restricts what the reporters could report on. One easy example, of course, is the most recent leak about HegSeth and having the second kill order, which was a leak.

2:03.8

This was not authorized. Time and time again, administration after administration,

2:10.7

reporters have always used anonymous sources, confidential sources, in order to keep the government accountable.

2:19.4

The press is often called the fourth branch of government.

2:23.4

I learned in journalism school how important that is.

2:27.4

The fact is, reporters need to know unauthorized information in order to check the balance of powers.

2:35.4

That was explicitly what the Department of Defense was trying to change with this acknowledgement.
