0:42.3	The DOJ has launched a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the woman who accused
0:47.9	Donald Trump of sexual assault and defamation.
0:51.2	So this investigation is reportedly focused on whether Carol committed perjury
0:55.7	in testimony tied to her two civil suits against Trump. So what we'll do is what we usually do.
1:02.2	We'll back up a little bit so that we have the full context. Back in 2019, E. Jean Carroll wrote a book.
1:08.8	In that book, she accused Trump of sexually assaulting her
1:12.7	in a dressing room at Bergdorf's in New York City in either 1995 or 1996.
1:18.3	Trump then came out and said he never knew her, that she wasn't his type, and that she made
1:23.8	up the allegations in order to sell books. So Carol then sues Trump for defamation in a New York
1:30.8	state court. She argues that Trump's statements were not only false, but they hurt her reputation.
1:36.9	And this initial case was pretty complicated procedurally, at least, because Trump was president when he made those
1:48.3	statements. So the DOJ actually tried to substitute the United States as the defendant in that case.
