Summary

It's been a horrific week for the state of aviation as scores and scores of flights have been cancelled last minute for a multitude of reasons. According to my calculations, there's been over 1,000 flights cancelled this week - mostly by British Airways but Easyjet have also had issues with flight paths. I take a look at what's happening and why - and how there's not much hope of improvement in the short-term.

Hello and welcome to the final independent travel podcast of the week from me Simon Calder.

0:08.4

And well, I'm just been counting up the cancellations of flights this week. We are certainly, I think,

0:16.6

in the past seven days looking at over 1,000 cancellations of short haul flights. Actually,

0:24.7

the biggest number is from British Airways. They've been averaging 120 per day. However,

0:31.8

those have been done some weeks ahead. And so unless like me, you delve around and try and find them, or perhaps like you,

0:41.4

you're very keen to get a flight and you suddenly think, hang on, why are there only three flights

0:46.7

from London to Geneva on that day? Normally there's about eight. Well, that would be because many of

0:53.7

them have been cancelled in advance by British Airways.

0:56.9

They're not selling tickets for them.

0:58.7

Anybody who was booked on them before the cancellations came in,

1:02.3

well, they're given plenty of notice and off they can do go to fix another flight.

1:08.3

But as I talked about yesterday, the problems at EasyJets are far worse from a

1:15.5

passenger welfare and general lack of stress position. There isn't much passenger welfare and there is a

1:24.2

great deal of stress going on. That's because EasyJet, which I calculate if you deem a cancellation that's at short notice

1:33.7

to be anything under about a couple of days of warning, well I think that they are looking

1:41.8

at maybe a total of 500 cancellations so far this week,

1:48.7

which is an awful lot for an airline.

1:53.5

Of course, EasyJet says, look, we have 1,700 flights a day.

1:57.0

So therefore, if some of them get cancelled, we're terribly sorry,

2:00.3

but most of the operation is working well.

2:03.6

And that's an entirely fair point.

2:05.8

Even at Gatwick Airport, worst affected today, with 14 cancellations to and from various points in the UK and in continental Europe.
