That's benefit number one.

You get to defer the tax.

The second benefit is that if you hold that investment

in the opportunity zone for five years,

then you get a 10% discount on that capital gains

that you originally had.

That's nice.

So technically it's a 10% step up in basis,

but if you had $100 in capital gains,

now you only have $90. So a little bit of a benefit, right? The third one but if you had $100 in capital gains, now you only have $90.

So a little bit of a benefit, right?

The third one is if you hold it a couple more years to seven years, the government will

give you an additional 5% discount for a total of 15% break on that initial capital gain.

So again, if it's $100, now you only have to pay $85, which is nice.
