We talked to Dr. Spalding today

about the anniversary of Washington's farewell address,

marking 226 years this year in just a couple of days.

Dr. Spalding, thanks so much for joining us.

Great to be with you, Scott, once again.

I look at my calendar, as I do from time to time,

and notice that the anniversary of the publication of Washington's farewell address is coming up.

September 19th, 1796, we're about to celebrate 226 years.

And I know that you wrote your dissertation on the farewell address.

It's a perfect combination as we approach this 226th anniversary to talk about the

farewell address a bit, which we have not done yet in the program.

So set the stage for us a little bit, Dr. Spalding.

What's the general sense here as Washington is leaving the presidency, and we have this

upcoming election?
