Hello and welcome to the Safeway Ridge on Sunday podcast, the first of 2019. Well, to kick off the new year, we had a stellar line-up, if I say so myself.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock was on the show to announce the government's new 10-year plan for the NHS,

and we were joined by Labor's shadow trade secretary, Barry Gardner. Now, if you're a regular viewer, you'll know that one of the things that we like to do as much as possible on Sophie Ridge on Sunday is to get out of Westminster out of the bubble and travel around the country.

And when we do, we always ask people what issues they

care most about. And one thing that comes up perhaps more than any other is the NHS. It's one of the

country's most cherished institutions and after years of squeezed funding, at least by historical

standards, it's once again at the forefront of voters' minds. To mark its 70th birthday last year, Theresa May announced a significant funding boost by the end of five years.

The annual budget for the NHS in England will be £20 billion higher,

and there will be more money for the Devold nations too.

This increase is still below what many people say the health service actually needs,

but at least it was a recognition

that voters want something to be done. But the money did not come string-free. It will be accompanied

by a new 10-year plan, which will lay out how the extra cash will be spent. And finally, after

some delay, we'll be finding out what's in that plan it's being unveiled this week. So who
