Let's get right into the first principle, which is, you do not need talent.

You just need to be able to follow the masters before you. There have been plenty of studies

that followed exceptionally talented children, and these studies showed that this talent did not equate to success.

The reality is that most successful people did not have an innate talent. Many of today's

modern masters went through a similar series of steps. They discovered the field they wanted to embark into,

engaged in an apprenticeship under a proven person in that field, developed a creative and

open mind, and then went on to achieve mastery. I was never extremely talented at any given area when I was growing up.

My freshman year in high school was one of the hardest years I had in my life. I was targeted

by a gang in my high school during the first week of school, and it just got worse from there.

For the entire year, I was physically assaulted on a daily basis. After others saw me getting pushed around by the gang, they began to

jump on the bandwagon of going after an easy target. I would routinely get food and paper thrown at me as I walked down the halls.

When the principal found out and talked to some of the gang members, it just made it worse.

In January of that year, my mom drove out to another city and dropped me off at a mall.

Every time I went to the mall, I would spend most of my time in a bookstore called Walden Books.

I typically went straight to the sports section to read books on baseball and baseball cards.
